The Forgotten Love of Yesterlives
Wareska was correct in guessing when Denesdaâs spell would wear off. They had passed under Fa Nahâs Tear and were on their way out of Fa Nah altogether when Shadowmane suddenly changed into a horse in a wink of light. Wareska thought the mare seemed relieved to have her old form back, but she could tell a part of Shadowmane missed kissing her, touching her, and holding her hand. She could see the sadness and the yearning in her gold-green eye and walked with her hand on the mareâs side to comfort her.
The passage out of the valley was long and narrow, with green hills drawing steadily closer on each side, like a hand slowly closing into a fist. Wareska and Shadowmane followed the river, and when it turned out of the valley and disappeared into a forest, they knew they had entered the lands of Cereul.
While Lorlas Ru and Fa Nah were considerably smaller regions, Cereul was the heart and center of Onthoria, a great sprawling land of connected forests divided only by their rivers. Many different peoples lived in villages in Cereul, scattered throughout, and so far spread, they hardly spoke to each other or even knew of each other. Yet all of them believed themselves the treeborn children of Ula Vaun, the patron goddess of plant life.
The forest trees crowded silent and serene before Wareska and Shadowmane, rustling with vibrant leaves of gold, orange, and red. It was a quiet place, where even the animals were still, and much of it had been flooded during the wet season after winter, so that Wareska had to hop from tree stump to tree trump while Shadowmane waded through the shallow water.
In the evenings, when they had not found their way out of the flood, Wareska would find a giant mushroom to curl up on or else climb a tree, while Shadowmane would doze on her hooves nearby.
Given the season, the night should have been cold in that silent, wet place, but the forest was always misty and warm, as if it had captured and retained the sunâs breath. Fireflies would spread their wings as Wareska prepared to sleep, rising above the misty waters to light the still night. Their reflection on the water was always magickal to Wareska, who caught them in her hands and listened with a smile to the secrets they shared with her.
The animals Wareska and Shadowmane encountered were quick and quiet and always avoided them. They passed little rivers and streams, where great bears stood in the distance, fishing their breakfast from the water; where spotted deer stopped for a drink, their long necks flexing as they swallowed. At a waterfall, a flock of cranes stood in peculiar poses, spreading their wings to absorb the sunlight, and small creatures fled through the underbrush, flushed by the magick echo of Wareskaâs step.
The mossy trees were enormous, and many were just hollow enough that Wareska used them as shelter when it rained. If
